NOTES for 2014

Hi All~   (January 15th, 2014 Update)
Coast Ride Update! (3 days until we push from Sports Basement!)

We are 3 days away until The Ride departs.   First off, the weather looks amazing for our three days on the Coast.   With that said, there is still a small small chance of a sprinkle or two.   Don’t forget to pack a rain cape!

We have an all-new location this year.   Sports Basement in the Presidio will be sending us off in style, providing bagels and coffee.  Please do not show up at the bridge as the Bridge Authority has said we are too large of group to roll from there.   Plan to arrive between 7:15-7:30!  Group photo at 7:45!   Roll at 8:00!

Friday Night Bag Drop Off!   If you want to get any last minute shopping done at Sports Basement, they are offering us 20% off everything in store.   You can bring your bag down and lock it up overnight in the front office and retrieve it first thing Saturday morning.   This is great for those who don’t want to pedal in the morning with a backpack.   Even if you don’t drop off bag, I would be psyched if folks came down to sign waivers and grab your water bottle and grab maps to avoid a Saturday morning backlog.

On Saturday morning, everyone must check-in and sign a waiver.  (Provided you didn’t check in the night before)   The Ride continues to grow and we want to make sure nobody is held responsible in case any mis-happenings that may occur.  Please bring $30, which covers SAG, Maps, Nutrition and a Cool Water Bottle that James Weinberger designed!  Restrooms are available inside Sports Basement on Saturday.

SAG will be at lunch in Davenport on Day 1, Ragged Point on Day 2, Subway in Lompoc Day 3 and various places along the road if you want to shed some clothes.  In addition, SAG will have water, sunscreen and plenty of “nutrition” to grab.  There will be OSMO, Muscle Milk, Zico Coconut Water,  ZEGO bars, 18 Rabbits, bananas and many other gels/bars to help get you through the day!

A Big shout out to Susie, Chris and Maciek for graciously offering to drive SAG for this years Coast Ride.  Please make sure to thank these three for taking time off work to carry our gear down the Coast.  A few ways to show your appreciation is to help load bags in the morning, buying them a beer or two as well as a big smile, which is always welcome! Their contact information is here.

Numbers to put in your phone.  Please call only with a major mechanical.   Flat changes should not require a phone call to the SAG.

Scott Witthoff                    (415) 640-0642

Susie Powell                     (206) 992-2200

Chris Hanrath                    (415)-320-1306

Maciek Wojciechowski      (650)-229-4169

A big thank-you to Strava as well.  Chris Hanrath will be behind the wheel of the Big Orange Strava Van!   Along with support on the road there are upload stations in the van, as well as some jersey bins and nutrition from our sponsors!   If you are not on Strava…ask someone and we will make sure to help you get signed up!

Directions of meeting spot at Sports Basement is HERE

There is no overnight parking in the Presidio or Sports Basement so please arrange to be dropped off Saturday morning or ride your bike over.

We are a very large group this year!  We have 135+ riders joining to participate in this “informal” ride from the bridge.  In addition, there will be another large “Coast Ride” group on the road, so please ride single file when the road shoulder is too narrow for a double pace line.   (Please do NOT ride 3 abreast)  Let's all be safe, not get tickets from the CHP, not anger passing drivers and ride smart!   New route out of SF: we will take an early turn off of Clement Street to avoid descending the steep 20% grade towards the cliff house.  We will have to be particularly careful climbing/descending Devils Slide in Half Moon Bay and several other narrow sections of roads.   We will be riding through the new Devils Slide tunnel, which is new for 2014!  We don't want any accidents. Thank you for your cooperation.   With a ride of this size, it is very important that we spread out on the road.  There will be many different groups, plenty of solo time and different ride dynamics along the way.  This ride is a great opportunity to make some new friends and appreciate how lucky we are to be able to ride our bikes down the beautiful California Coast!

Consider stopping in Half Moon Bay to fill up bottles, as it is a long way to Davenport with no stops in between.  You want to make sure to hydrate all weekend and apply Sunscreen!

Our Day 1 lunch spot is in Davenport.  The good folks at Whale City Bakery Bar and Grill are anxiously waiting for us with tables set up out back and extra staff!  Please be very cautious with railroad tracks entering Davenport, we have had a few bad accidents on these tracks in years past.  You can also call in order ahead of time (20-30 minutes) from Davenport to have sandwiches ready for you when you arrive.  (831) 423-9009

First aid kit: There will be a small first aid kit that is provided for the Ride's use. This will be kept in the van. Please do not help yourself. If you need something from the first aid kit, please ask the drivers of the SAG to help you find it.

Bike tools: A few participants are providing bike tools in case there are mechanicals pre- and post-riding each day. These tools will be kept in the van as well. Again, please do not help yourself to the tools. Please ask SAG drivers or myself as we don't want the tools to get lost/unaccounted for after use and wouldn't want to have to replace anyone's bike tools post-Ride.

Breakfast and Gear drop-off each morning: Breakfast is at 6am on Sunday and with large groups of cyclists, you don’t want to be late. There will be Starbucks coffee waiting for you as you walk into the breakfast at 6:00 on Sunday.   I know how cranky you under caffeinated coffee drinkers can get when the hotel is out of coffee with a 20-person back up!  Please be prepared to put your gear bag in the van no later than 7am on Days 2 and 3. The group will depart the hotel at 7am sharp each morning so you don't want to be late!  There will be a floor pump available but don’t wait until 7am to remember to put air in your tires. Your gear will be waiting at hotel each day.  The first group(s) in can help unload the van and set bags by van.

Van Ride Home, if you have space, or are looking to share, please let me know, as there are several looking for a ride home.

Please do not leave your bike unattended when stopping in convenient stores, restaurants, coffee shops etc.  We had a bike stolen a few years back in Santa Cruz, which was no fun.  Always assign ONE person to watch bikes while you go inside.

Sponsor Appreciation.   We have more sponsors than ever this year who have donated products that make The Ride even better.  Please show them some love by giving them shoutouts on Twitter, FB, Instagram, posting pics, and include their company names (and hashtags if provided). And give them your straight up feedback - they all want to hear how you like (or don’t like) their products.   Best would be to post  pics from our gorgeous coastline of people enjoying their products, or simply out having a great time on the bike.

Big thanks to repeat sponsors and new sponsors alike.  A couple of my faves:  ZEGO Bars, from Jonathan Shambroom – delicious and nutritious, and great on the bike. Nature’s Bakery - my all time favorite Fig Bar.

We’ve got loads of chamois butter from betwixt, don’t miss out.  And, well, heck, the list is long – here’s all of our sponsors:

Achieve Performance Training & Coaching - #achieveptc

Betwixt Chamois Butter - @zealiosskincare

GU gels  - @GUEnergyLabs    #GuCrew

Hint water  - @hintwater

Muscle Milk - @MuscleMilk #Musclemilk

Nature’s Bakery Fig bars - @naturesbakery   #snackhealthyfuel #naturesbakery

Osmo Nutrition - @osmonutrition

Sports Basement - @SportsBasement

Strava - @Strava

ZEGO bars - @ZegoSnacks   #ZEGO

Zico Coconut water - @ZICO

18 Rabbits bars - @18Rabbits

And…. For The Coast Ride – Instagram - #thecoastride

In addition, Dana Williams of Achieve Performance Training & Coaching  is offering us a great deal to Get fitter and faster on your bike with Achieve.   All participants with this year's Coast Ride will receive $150 off their first month of cycle coaching or personal training.

Lastly, this Ride is unaffiliated with any organization or persons. Remember - this is NOT an organized ride! We are a bunch of friends riding down the Coast.  You choose to ride The Ride at your own risk.  Many of us who enjoy The Ride want you to enjoy it too, which is why we are helping to organize it. Please do not blame anyone on the Ride for any mis-happenings that may occur to you, get mad when people don't wait for you, etc. as this is a volunteer organized effort. We hope that you enjoy this Ride as much as everyone in the in previous years. In the spirit of The Ride, please be pleasant and peaceful to all.

Thanks everyone!

Scott

Update #3 (January 5th)

Howdy Cycling Friends~

We are less than TWO-WEEKS away from our push-off from an all-new location…. YES, Sports Basement (in the Presidio) will be providing coffee and bagels for a warm send-off for the beautiful Coast Ride.  (Golden Gate Bridge Authority said no more rolling from the Bridge)  Sports Basement location: HERE  The two-week Forecast looks great, but still too far out to really know if rain will make it’s way to California. With that said, it still doesn’t mean we won’t get a little rain along the way.   Make sure to pack your winter cycling gear.  You do not want to be caught out along Big Sur without a Rain Cape and your best foul weather gear!

ARE YOU RIDING?
There are 120+ riders who have indicated they are coming on the ride.   If you are riding, please go to the website (http://thecoastride.ning.com/) and from the home page click on the link under "EVENTS" on the left column that says, "RSVP here – 2014 Coast Ride".   Thank you as this gives us a proper headcount.  If you know you are not coming, please change your response to “NO” as I am ordering water bottles tomorrow and need an accurate estimate of how many to order!  In addition, many of you have “signed” up on the Coast Ride site but not officially joined by answering, “YES”

A site is up with all the details and logistics about the ride can found (here)

Please make sure that you have exchanged cell phone numbers with folks you plan on riding with. In addition, make sure your tires are new, (put them on this weekend and get a few miles on them before we roll) bike is tuned and you are ready to roll come Saturday morning!  Traditionally this ride is a self supported, no frills ride.  SAG is mainly used to transport bags from hotel to hotel.  Make sure you have a multi tool, spare tube, pump and cash to purchase food along way.   SAG will be at several spots along the way each day but don’t count on them for help with mechanicals.   Please refer to the packing list and pick up whatever items you need before it’s too late!

SAG.  Please bring $30 Saturday morning which helps cover the SAG driver(s), fuel, van(s) costs, maps, water bottles etc...   Limit to one reasonable (small) duffle bag or backpack.

Make sure to arrange your own ONE-WAY vehicle and Carpool with others home.  Several of us have decided to actually stay the night and check out Santa Barbara for a well-deserved break from the bike on Monday Night!  The ride ends at the Lemon Tree in Santa Barbara where we will have a shower available (everyone can chip in a few bucks to help pay for a room to shower before driving back to the Bay Area) If you are picking up a car from the Santa Barbara airport, please remember that we ride right by the airport on our way into SB as you do not want to backtrack 5-8 miles to pick up your van/car.

ROUTE.   Days one and three can be found here, thanks to Strava Route Builder!   Please download rides, and print cue sheets for super easy navigation.   Day 2 we will stay together for a few miles through Seaside/Monterey until we hit Hwy 1.  For the next 120 miles, stay on Hwy 1.

Day 2: Seaside-Morro Bay
I will have maps available each morning for those who have never ventured through Santa Cruz or some other tricky sections of the coast.

START:  Please arrive at 7:15 Saturday morning to sign waivers, ready to load your bags, and get your smile on for the group photo at 7:45, last bathroom break, and roll by 8:00 sharp!  Please be mindful that everyone must sign waivers and pay $30 to join us on the ride!

Day 1 is traditionally a long day in the saddle and we'll be chasing daylight if we dilly-dally too long!   If you are late, make sure to know the route.  A good spot to fill up bottles is in Half Moon Bay then a well-deserved lunch Spot in Davenport can be found at the Whale City Bakery or the convenient store next door.  Davenport is 75 miles into the day!

Hotel Rooms - if you have space, or are looking to share or plan to cancel, let me know or better yet, post on the Website since we will want to KEEP your room since we need rooms & beds.   Please let me know if you have an extra bed for one of our awesome SAG drivers!   I need to find him a bed!  (promises not to snore)

BREAKFAST:  The morning of Day 2 in Seaside we'll eat breakfast at the hotel.  (Opens at 6:00 am)  For those who need their coffee fix, Starbucks across the street opens at 5:00am!  I will have Starbucks Coffee waiting for you at breakfast as well.  With a group this size, make sure to get to breakfast early!   The Hotel offers: hard boiled eggs, scrambled eggs, toast, oatmeal, bananas, etc...  Pump up tires at 6:45 and roll by 7:00 as a group!

Lunch: It’s a long day so you want to make sure to stop in the town of Big Sur to fill up bottles at roughly mile 35.  The booming town of Lucia is the next opportunity to fill bottles 57 miles into the day.  Hydrate folks!   Finally, LUNCH at Ragged Point at mile 85!   You are done with the hills of Big Sur as the run into Morro Bay is mainly flat with hopefully a tailwind to push you there!

Breakfast: The morning of Day 3 in Morro Bay, (back by popular demand from last year) we will roll as a group at 7:00am to San Luis Obispo and split up for 30 minutes, hitting one of the many café/coffee shops and regroup on the corner of Higuera and Broad in SLO to continue on.   Slight route change this year, as we will by-pass the big hill into the Vandenberg Airforce Base to avoid busy sections of roads leading into Lompoc.   Route maps will be available in morning.  We will stop for Lunch at the Lompoc Subway or many other options in the shopping center near the Subway.

SPONSORS: A few of our favorite companies are sponsoring us this year and kicking in some great product. Big thanks to: Osmo Nutrition, Muscle Milk, Zico Coconut Water, GU, 18 Rabbits, ZegoNatures BakeryBetwixt Chamois ButterStravaHintwaterAchieve Training and Coaching and Sports Basement!  How awesome is that?!!

We’ll have above “nutrition” at Sports Basement at the start and in the SAG along the way!    I strongly encourage you to try each product, as you are the folks that provide opinions, recommendations, training, and examples for people who look up to you for the latest and greatest in all things Nutrition!   Please still plan and bring all your own nutrition, and enjoy this in addition!

Remember– be respectful and pack a *single, small* bag for the SAG vehicle.

Look forward to seeing old friends and meeting many new ones!

Please feel free to email me if you have any questions,

Let us know if you are coming  - RSVP here!
