Hi All~ (January 15th, 2014 Update)
Coast Ride Update! (3 days until we push from Sports Basement!)
We are 3 days away until The Ride departs. First off, the weather looks amazing for our three days on the Coast. With that said, there is still a small small chance of a sprinkle or two. Don’t forget to pack a rain cape!
We have an all-new location this year. Sports Basement in the Presidio will be sending us off in style, providing bagels and coffee. Please do not show up at the bridge as the Bridge Authority has said we are too large of group to roll from there. Plan to arrive between 7:15-7:30! Group photo at 7:45! Roll at 8:00!
Friday Night Bag Drop Off! If you want to get any last minute shopping done at Sports Basement, they are offering us 20% off everything in store. You can bring your bag down and lock it up overnight in the front office and retrieve it first thing Saturday morning. This is great for those who don’t want to pedal in the morning with a backpack. Even if you don’t drop off bag, I would be psyched if folks came down to sign waivers and grab your water bottle and grab maps to avoid a Saturday morning backlog.
On Saturday morning, everyone must check-in and sign a waiver. (Provided you didn’t check in the night before) The Ride continues to grow and we want to make sure nobody is held responsible in case any mis-happenings that may occur. Please bring $30, which covers SAG, Maps, Nutrition and a Cool Water Bottle that James Weinberger designed! Restrooms are available inside Sports Basement on Saturday.
SAG will be at lunch in Davenport on Day 1, Ragged Point on Day 2, Subway in Lompoc Day 3 and various places along the road if you want to shed some clothes. In addition, SAG will have water, sunscreen and plenty of “nutrition” to grab. There will be OSMO, Muscle Milk, Zico Coconut Water, ZEGO bars, 18 Rabbits, bananas and many other gels/bars to help get you through the day!
A Big shout out to Susie, Chris and Maciek for graciously offering to drive SAG for this years Coast Ride. Please make sure to thank these three for taking time off work to carry our gear down the Coast. A few ways to show your appreciation is to help load bags in the morning, buying them a beer or two as well as a big smile, which is always welcome! Their contact information is here.

There is no overnight parking in the Presidio or Sports Basement so please arrange to be dropped off Saturday morning or ride your bike over.
We are a very large group this year! We have 135+ riders joining to participate in this “informal” ride from the bridge. In addition, there will be another large “Coast Ride” group on the road, so please ride single file when the road shoulder is too narrow for a double pace line. (Please do NOT ride 3 abreast) Let's all be safe, not get tickets from the CHP, not anger passing drivers and ride smart! New route out of SF: we will take an early turn off of Clement Street to avoid descending the steep 20% grade towards the cliff house. We will have to be particularly careful climbing/descending Devils Slide in Half Moon Bay and several other narrow sections of roads. We will be riding through the new Devils Slide tunnel, which is new for 2014! We don't want any accidents. Thank you for your cooperation. With a ride of this size, it is very important that we spread out on the road. There will be many different groups, plenty of solo time and different ride dynamics along the way. This ride is a great opportunity to make some new friends and appreciate how lucky we are to be able to ride our bikes down the beautiful California Coast!
Consider stopping in Half Moon Bay to fill up bottles, as it is a long way to Davenport with no stops in between. You want to make sure to hydrate all weekend and apply Sunscreen!
Our Day 1 lunch spot is in Davenport. The good folks at Whale City Bakery Bar and Grill are anxiously waiting for us with tables set up out back and extra staff! Please be very cautious with railroad tracks entering Davenport, we have had a few bad accidents on these tracks in years past. You can also call in order ahead of time (20-30 minutes) from Davenport to have sandwiches ready for you when you arrive. (831) 423-9009
First aid kit: There will be a small first aid kit that is provided for the Ride's use. This will be kept in the van. Please do not help yourself. If you need something from the first aid kit, please ask the drivers of the SAG to help you find it.
Bike tools: A few participants are providing bike tools in case there are mechanicals pre- and post-riding each day. These tools will be kept in the van as well. Again, please do not help yourself to the tools. Please ask SAG drivers or myself as we don't want the tools to get lost/unaccounted for after use and wouldn't want to have to replace anyone's bike tools post-Ride.
Breakfast and Gear drop-off each morning: Breakfast is at 6am on Sunday and with large groups of cyclists, you don’t want to be late. There will be Starbucks coffee waiting for you as you walk into the breakfast at 6:00 on Sunday. I know how cranky you under caffeinated coffee drinkers can get when the hotel is out of coffee with a 20-person back up! Please be prepared to put your gear bag in the van no later than 7am on Days 2 and 3. The group will depart the hotel at 7am sharp each morning so you don't want to be late! There will be a floor pump available but don’t wait until 7am to remember to put air in your tires. Your gear will be waiting at hotel each day. The first group(s) in can help unload the van and set bags by van.
Van Ride Home, if you have space, or are looking to share, please let me know, as there are several looking for a ride home.
Please do not leave your bike unattended when stopping in convenient stores, restaurants, coffee shops etc. We had a bike stolen a few years back in Santa Cruz, which was no fun. Always assign ONE person to watch bikes while you go inside.

Lastly, this Ride is unaffiliated with any organization or persons. Remember - this is NOT an organized ride! We are a bunch of friends riding down the Coast. You choose to ride The Ride at your own risk. Many of us who enjoy The Ride want you to enjoy it too, which is why we are helping to organize it. Please do not blame anyone on the Ride for any mis-happenings that may occur to you, get mad when people don't wait for you, etc. as this is a volunteer organized effort.
